As a small town located in the heart of the Liverpool Plains, Gunnedah is known for its rich agricultural history and natural beauty. But beyond its rolling hills and farming traditions, the town is also home to a number of nationally and globally recognised annual events that attract visitors from all over the world.
Perhaps one of the most well-known events in Gunnedah is the Country Music Festival. Held each year in late March, the festival is a celebration of all things country music, with live performances, workshops, and competitions for both amateurs and professionals. The festival attracts thousands of visitors each year and has helped put Gunnedah on the map as a hub for country music enthusiasts.
Another popular event in Gunnedah is the annual Porcupine Lookout Picnic Races. Held each year on the first Saturday in May, the races are a chance for locals and visitors alike to don their best attire and indulge in some good old-fashioned horse racing. The event features a range of races, from the main event to the kids' pony race, and is a fun day out for all ages.
In June each year, Gunnedah also hosts the Beef Week festival, a celebration of the town's rich agricultural heritage and the beef industry. The festival includes a range of events and activities, from cattle judging competitions to meat cook-offs and beef-themed entertainment. It's a great opportunity for visitors to sample some of the best beef in the region and learn more about the industry that has helped shape the town of Gunnedah.
For those interested in the arts, the local AgQuip Field Days in August serves as an agricultural and regional field day featuring over 3,000 companies showcasing the latest machinery, automotive products and other agricultural products to 100,000 visitors annually. In addition, September sees the staging of the Gunnedah Show in the town's showground, featuring cattle and sheep pavilions, horse events, carnival rides, and other competitions and displays.
Finally, visitors to Gunnedah in November can catch the Red Chief Local Aboriginal Land Council Nawdyawdy Noongarri cultural festival, celebrating and promoting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The festival includes traditional dance performances, storytelling, and art exhibitions, and provides a unique insight into the rich history and culture of the local Indigenous communities.
These are just a few of the many annual events that take place in and around Gunnedah each year. Whether you're a lover of music, culture, agriculture, or just looking for a good time, there's always something happening in this vibrant and welcoming town in the heart of New South Wales.
